John Houck was born May 15, 1960 in Long Beach, CA. He has designed more disc golf courses than anyone living today. He has been devoted to the love and evolution of disc sports for 30 years with 25 years of devotion to the growth of disc golf.
John began his career in disc sports with back-to-back World Champion titles in Freestyle Frisbee for 1984 and 1985 Freestyle Frisbee. In 1989 John founded the Circular Skies Over Texas tour, which was the largest regional tour in the country. He was Commissioner of the Professional Disc Golf Association from 1994 to 1996, and has been President of the Disc Golf Foundation since 1998. He was inducted to the Disc Golf Hall of Fame in 1998. John is the Head of Course Design for the International Disc Golf Center [1], and has designed or consulted on course designs for numerous world and national tournaments, with over 100 course designs, revisions, and consultations spanning his career. John Houck is also the Founder of the annual World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend Disc golf, an international public event that was started in May 1991. In 2010 Worlds Biggest Teams Tournament was held at Circle R Disc Golf Ranch and 456 Players competed in November. In November 2011, the Texas Teams Tournament hosted 468 players at Circle R Disc Golf Ranch. Over 500 people came to Circle R for three days to play and socialize. There is camping available and meals offered by reservation. Live Music Saturday night at a party where many prizes are given away by raffle or the game ring of fire. Teams are recognized for the "spirit award" and the "best dressed teams". Players came from across the state to compete for the title of Champions. This is a non-sanctioned event and created by John Houck to provide an event for players who share the love of the sport. It's about enjoying the weekend with other disc golfers and enjoying a unique team format created by John for the players. This event is the largest disc golf team event in the world. John Houck [2] finished designing the first disc golf course at a business park, a 550-acre (2.2 km2) commercial development in Austin, Texas Austin, Texas called the MetCenter [3]. The course opened for public play in 2009.
John has recently finished designing a championship course on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Hillcrest Farms, Bonshaw, PEI is now open for play and the course is completed.
In Talco, Texas, near Mt. Vernon, Texas, he recently finished designing two Championship courses at a resort called Selah Ranch. These courses have the highest ratings by the players who have been there. Golf carts are available for rental for those who want an experience unique to disc golf. These courses were carved out of raw land and John's vision has created world-class disc golf courses for the players to enjoy at Selah Ranch. There are ponds, large trees and a wonderful clubhouse for players to enjoy. Overnight accommodations are available in beautiful houses/cottages and the experience is first class. It's reasonably priced and well worth the trip.
He is currently designing a course on Nantucket Island and the course should be complete and open in Summer 2012. He is designing at least 6 more courses in Texas this year and looks forward to projects in other states and other countries. He is currently working on developing opportunities to design in other countries so that he can spread his love of the sport around the world.
